I have. But as far as I can tell it doesnt let me set a password. I've tried my system admin password with no luck.

The "make admin" command does not need a password if you are root on the server. Add "sudo " before "su".

Unless the removal of an app left some remainings. For example I had to manually delete netdata stuff from statoverride for my system to be able to run upgrades successfully.

are you sure that `nginx` running on VPS is not terminating SSL? Perhaps you should have simple port forwarding there?
